Hello Dr Gutman,

I wobbled across the finish line after an unusually difficult run in the half-marathon on Sunday. A volunteer instantly grabbed me by the arm, whisked me into the medical tent where I received attention for what we thought was dehydration.

About 25 minutes later I sat up on my cot and began to experience heaviness in the chest area - within seconds the doctors & their team had me in emergency care mode. (I'm sorry that I can't remember their names)

After a quick assessment I was given an aspirin, two shots of nitro, and readied for a quick exit to St Paul's Hospital. Once there, it was confirmed that I'd experienced a mild heart attack; after undergoing tests I'm told that there is no heart damage, blocked arteries or valve dysfunction. (It was possibly a combination of dehydration, low level flu bug and having given blood the week before...and some bad luck.)

I want to thank you and your team for the way you responded. I realize now that I couldn't have been in a better place to experience this. I'm truly thankful that I was surrounded by so many capable and caring people. Vancouver Marathon is first class - congratulations on 40 years.
